Patient empowerment is on the rise and it has become increasingly important for drug companies to develop patient-centric approaches that include the redesign of patient support programs to increase product loyalty and prevent patients from switching to competing products. Initially, companies offered patient support programs to improve access to and usage of drugs and adherence to drug protocols; recently, these programs have expanded.

In turn, pharmaceutical and other health companies need to shift their approach to the marketplace to satisfy patient demands.
