Project Experience

Positioning

Client Situation
Our client, a major electric utility, needed a better understanding of the competitive position of a local energy aggregator that had been focused on large users of energy and was contemplating entering the mass market.

Fuld & Company's Approach
Fuld & Company conducted primary research to understand the target's relative weakness and strengths and assess the target's relative ability to implement its strategy successfully. As a result of our research and analysis, we concluded that the aggregator had notable strengths as an objective third party that was valued by large energy users and had differentiated it from other aggregators through the use of sophisticated proprietary technologies.

Benefits and Implications
Our client used this information to make decisions about how to protect vulnerable customer accounts as well as to consider future alliance strategies. For more information please contactMark Ferri at mferri@fuld.comor (617) 492-5900

Client situation
Our client for this project, a mid-sized electric utility, asked Fuld & Company to help them understand the significance and implications of a neighboring utility's corporate restructuring activities.

Fuld & Company's Approach
Our research focused on an investigation of the newly formed business units the competitor had established in the unregulated markets, such as an international power generation development business unit, a security services division, and a financial services arm, and evaluated the projected financial performance, target customers, and roll-out strategy of each. Fuld & Company determined that the competitor's strategic plan was to expand its regional customer base through small acquisitions with a broader geographic representation that could be later used as a platform for selling additional products and services.

Benefits and Implications
From the analysis we delivered, our client was able to determine which of its customers was most vulnerable and how its own plans for unregulated products and services were affected by this competitor's actions. For more information please contactMark Ferri at mferri@fuld.comor (617) 492-5900
